Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Los Angeles: Since 1877

The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Los Angeles Chapter (spcaLA) has been around sicne 1877. They work to place abused and homeless animals in loving homes and they work to stop animal cruelty altogether.

Ensuring Equality for Our Furry Friends

Through humane education, dog training, a pet hotel, and law enforcement efforts, the spcaLA is making progress by providing humane lifestyles for many animals. The law enforcement division investigates cruelty cases and prosecutes people who neglect and/or abuse animals in California. Through providing medical attention, returning lost animals to their owners, or finding them caring homes, the spcaLA division has worked to relieve the distress of helpless animals in difficult situations.

SPCA Human Officers can make arrests, issue citations, file criminal charges, serve warrants, and provide relief to animals through DART (Disaster Animal Response Team) and through the Humane Education department. They are truly enforcers of animal equality.

How You Can Help

Like most animal shelters, you can help out by adopting a pet, volunteering, or donating. Donating offers many different possibilities for animals to live fuller, happier lives. from $50 to give an orphaned kitten a chance of life to $500 to save animals during natural disasters by providing food and supplies through DART, your donation, big or small, will make an impact on the life of an animal. Donate now.

Also, check out their volunteer opportunities and their adoption petfinder. You can play with animals through volunteering or take a pet home with you from SPCA.

Important: If you know of an instance of animal cruelty, you need to report it, and spcaLA can help. You can report online or call their Cruelty Tipline at 1-800-540-SPCA. The SPCA wants to remind you that barking dogs, loud cats, or loose animals are not animal cruelty. If you suspect any form of cruelty, please report it.

Friends of Animals Foundation: Making Adopting Pets Easy

The Friends of Animals Foundation was founded in 1983 and has worked since then to match rescued pets with loving and responsible families. FOAF provides medical care, spaying and neutering, training and behavioral assistance.

They always work at “full capacity,” meaning that they have an average of 145 animals at the shelter on any given day.

FOAF works mainly to get homeless or abandoned pets adopted by a family that will continue to give them the care they need. It is a non-profit, no-kill rescue shelter in West Los Angeles, CA. You can lend a hand (or paw) by adopting a cat, adopting a dog, or volunteering.

Adoption Policy

The Friends of Animals Foundation is very careful about the placement of their animals.  Before placing the animal in a home, the home is screened as part of the legitimate adoption process – making sure that the animal will not be used for medical purposes or as a fighting dog. All animals are delivered to their new homes and the compatibility is observed between owner and pet before anything is permanent. Adoption fees are required, and the money goes towards large bills for animals still at the adoption agency.

Save-A-Life: The Happiest Shelter on Earth

Save-A-Life is a 100% all-volunteer, all-donation organization that provides a loving, healthy home for abandoned animals. They have a strict no-kill policy which is quite honorable considering many stray animal organizations are forced to kill animals to make space for others.

Their property is in North Los Angeles. A 10-acre ranch is a perfect place for cats an dogs to run and to play. It is an “open home-like atmosphere” for all of the animals. This makes the animals happier and healthier, and happy, healthy animals are more likely to be adopted. The large space has plenty of room available for needy animals. They do not offer adoptions at this property, but they offer a list of adoption locations.

Los Angeles Animal Services: Promoting the Welfare of Animals and People

We envision the day when every pet born has a good home and is cared for all its life, and no person is ever endangered by an animal.

The Los Angeles Animal Services push for the humane treatment of animals and humans through respect, trust, honest communication and humane treatment.

Their services include adopting a pet, finding a lost pet, searching for animal identification, permits, animal cruelty complaints, animal licenses, vaccinations, spay and neuter information, stray cats, microchipping, dangerous animals, and small animal rescue (SmaRT).

Animal Cruelty Task Force

The Animal Cruelty Task Force investigates and prosecutes animal cruelty cases. People who impose cruelty on animals generally have sociopathic behavior, and a serious lack of responsibility and and conscience. ACTF combines the forces of Animal Control Officers, the LAPD, and the City Attorney’s Office to investigate the most terrible cases of animal cruelty including beatings, dog and cock fights, poisonings, and other abuses.

Do you need to report an instance of animal cruelty?

Contact the Animal Cruelty Task Force at 213-486-0450 or the LA Animal Services at 888-452-7381.  The Animal Services staff will make sure to investigate any case that is reported. In 2006, the task force investigated 290 reports and made 15 felony arrests.

Are you interested in giving back to LA Animal Services?
