How to Give Back Locally on Earth Day

Earth Day is the holiday to celebrate our planet earth and sharing information about how to preserve our precious planet. Here at Giving Local, we believe that making the planet a better place to live directly affects the people who live on it, and future generations to come. Whether you are looking to do a full-fledged beach clean up today, or you are looking to pick up that extra piece of trash that didn’t make it into the trash bin, make a difference today!

Heal the Bay: When We Heal the Earth, We Heal Ourselves

The ocean is one of the most important natural resources on the planet. Without the ocean, many ecosystems would cease to exist, and the planet would be destroyed. That is why it is so important to preserve our oceans.

Heal the bay works to fight both human and animal effects on the ocean which include urban and storm water runoff, plastic pollution, over-fishing, climate change, offshore drilling, and ocean dumping. Our coastal waters are increasingly threatened by human activity. Heal the bay works to educate the masses and reverse the negative effects we have made to our oceans.

Why We Need to Heal the Bay

The ocean is not limited to one area. What is dumped in China can travel across the Pacific Ocean to Los Angeles and affect local surfers in Venice Beach, the sea otter population in Santa Cruz, or the kelp gardens along the California coast.

  • Rivers and creeks carry about 30 billion gallons of storm water to and urban runoff into the ocean annually.
  • 10-25 million gallons of bacteria-ridden, trash infested, polluted water go through storm drains and into the ocean every day.
  • Urban runoff is the #1 cause of pollution to the Southern California Oceans.
  • 60-80% of all marine debris is plastic.
  • 267 species of animals have been killed and injured by marine debris.

In order to preserve many species, including our own, we need to Heal the Bay.
